In
The Community-
Civic
Involvement
Pender & Coward recognizes the importance of giving back to the community that has helped us to prosper throughout the year. While many of our Attorneys and Staff Members serve on various Civic and Community Service Boards throughout the year donating their time and talents to these organizations, there are other activities that go on behind the scenes that you may not be aware of.

Several times each year the Staff and Attorneys of Pender & Coward come together to participate in Community Service Projects.
Pender & Coward's Band-Aid-Brigade
In support of those who have survived cancer, and with the hope of making a difference in the lives of those who may be facing this terrible disease , Pender & Coward formed its first Relay for Life team and successfully raised $13,000 for the fight against cancer this year.
The team which included employees Karen Shepherd, Diane Reid, Debby Forehand, Tess Crell, Charlotte Ferrara and Susanne Owens put forth a tremendous fund raising effort in support of the Relay, and in their first year receive a Gold Relay Award for their outstanding work.
Relay for Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten; that those who face cancer will be supported; and that one day, cancer will be eliminated. The Pender & Coward Band Aid Brigade is now recruiting for 2006!

St. Mary's Holiday Fundraiser - 2003
Games, toys, dolls and clothes were received by the children of St. Mary's this year, but in lieu of individual Christmas presents the Staff and Attorneys of Pender & Coward showed their holiday spirit in a different way.
Pender & Coward chose to donate a gift to the facility this year in anticipation of the move to their new location in the spring. Contributions received through fundraisers enabled the Staff and Attorneys of Pender & Coward to purchase a 52" Television and DVD Player for the children's activity room. It is our hope that this will be used for both education and entertainment.
Second Annual St. Mary's Back-To-School Drive A Great Success
Crayons, pencils, notebooks, construction paper and the like. All children enjoy new school supplies to begin the year, and those at St. Mary's are no exception. While many of these children are unable to attend traditional classes, the Staff of St. Mary's is committed both the medical and educational needs of everyone in their care.
Pender & Coward's Second Annual Back-To-School Drive began Friday, August 1, 2003 and was a tremendous success. Staff Members and Attorneys contributed pens, pencils, notebooks, scissors, construction paper and craft materials in hopes of making the first day of school something special for the children. In addition, the firm secured a donation of 25 backpacks from a national manufacturer and presented the contributions to St. Mary’s just in time for the beginning of the school year.
We wish the Staff and Children of St. Mary’s a successful school year and thank the members of our firm for their continuing efforts of behalf of St. Mary’s.
Legal Food Frenzy generates 54,000 meals for the hungry
Pender & Coward attorneys and staff showed their community spirit this year during the Legal Food Frenzy which collects canned food for the hungry. The event is sponsored by the Norfolk/Portsmouth Bar Association to benefit the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. It was a tremendous success and will provide more than 54,000 meals to hungry citizens.
Once again the rivalry between law firms was fierce, and our long-standing position in "First Place for Large Law Firms" was relinquished to Vandeventer Black. Congratulations to them; we look forward to next year's event.
