Practice Areas

Firm shareholder James T. Lang developed an extensive practice in commercial and business law upon joining the firm in 2005.  Clients say that Mr. Lang is “an honest exceptionally professional attorney”, that he is an “all around good person", and that “he is like a bulldog when he takes a case . . . he follows every detail until it gets resolved”.  Mr. Lang draws on 24 years of legal experience to find solutions to his clients’ problems.  In 2013 Mr. Lang is building his Environmental Law and his Admiralty/Maritime Law practice areas, while continuing to serve the many other important needs of his commercial and business clients, and while continuing in leadership positions for worthwhile volunteer community service organizations throughout Hampton Roads.

Mr. Lang litigates in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, and in the General District Courts and the Circuit Courts throughout Hampton Roads.  He has argued in the Virginia Workers Compensation Commission, in the Virginia Court of Appeals, in the Virginia Supreme Court, in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, and in the U.S Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.  He was a Law Clerk for the Honorable Henry Coke Morgan, Jr., U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Virginia in 2002 to 2003.

Mr. Lang is a published author who earned his Juris Doctorate from Case Western Reserve University School of Law, graduating summa cum laude, and becoming a member of the Order of the Coif. While there, he served as Law Review Editor, and was elected “Student of the Year” by the graduating class. In addition, he holds an LL.M. degree in Environmental Law from The George Washington University, where he graduated with highest honors. Mr. Lang holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Southern California.

In addition to his various bar association memberships, he is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Virginia, the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Virginia, the U.S. District Court, Western District of Virginia, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Eastern District of Virginia, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

Mr. Lang is a member of the Norfolk Portsmouth Bar Association, the Virginia Beach Bar Association, and the Virginia State Bar Association. His volunteer work includes service as Chairman of the Bayside District at the Tidewater Council of the Boy Scouts of America, where he was recognized with the Distinguished Service Award for 2012.  He also serves on the Board of the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, serves as the General Counsel to the Transportation Task Force of Empower Hampton Roads, and he mentors two at-risk pre-teen youth.   Until 2010, Mr. Lang served for six years as the Subcommittee Vice Chair for the Virginia State Bar Second District Subcommittee (Norfolk).

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Lang completed a 25-year career in the U.S. Navy.  He entered the Navy in 1977 as an E-1 Fireman Recruit and finished as an O-5 Commander, including 16 years as a U.S. Navy JAG Attorney.
