Paralegal/Legal Assistant - Trusts & Estates

Job Description

The Virginia Beach office of Pender & Coward seeks a qualified Paralegal/Legal Assistant to perform a variety of duties in support of an Attorney in the area of Trusts and Estates.

This is a Full Time position, 40 hours per week. 

We offer a flexible schedule and are willing to train the right person.

The candidate will be expected to provide high level assistance, balance case work with office duties, meet reasonable time lines, and provide excellent client service.

Salary commensurate with experience.


  • Act as a liaison between clients and the attorneys by maintaining continual communications via email, telephone, and in person. Follow up with clients regarding status of documents and information, etc.
  • Prepare correspondence, estate planning and trust documents, titling documents, accountings and other documents which are part of estate planning and trust and estate administration process.
  • Ensure timely filings with the Commissioner of Accounts and taxing authorities.
  • Assist attorneys in preparation for client meetings.
  • Meet with clients in appropriate circumstances.
  • Maintain file deadlines.
  • Organize documents in the files for which responsible.
  • Input timekeeper data.
  • Perform a variety of other tasks as learned and assigned.


  • Minimum of three years’ relevant work experience in a professional office setting or a combination of relevant work experience and educational experience.
  • Ability and desire to learn the trusts and estates field.
  • Some financial background is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn other software programs, including a document assembly program and trust accounting software (which requires the ability to deal with numbers.)
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and meet tight deadlines.
  • Proven meticulous attention to detail and proofreading skills.
  • Demonstrated proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion, to adapt to various competing demands, and to provide the highest level of client service and response.
  • Expert level verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, attorneys, co-workers, and other outside professionals.
